Have you upgraded early to iOS 12? Photo: Ste Smith/Cult of Mac
iOS 12 users can finally enjoy Fortnite again after Apple’s latest beta fixed random game crashes.
A problem with downloading Netflix titles has also been eliminated, but a number of new bugs have been introduced with this release — including on that breaks the new Screen Time feature.

A fresh new version of iOS 12 is waiting for developers to download, bringing with it a fresh batch of fixes and some UI tweaks.

The iPad is going to get a powerful new graphics tool. Photo: Ian Fuchs/Cult of Mac
There are some great graphics apps available for iPad. One which has been largely absent up until now? The proper full version of Adobe Photoshop.
Fortunately, that looks like it will change this year as Adobe Systems plans to launch the full version of the iconic photo-editing app for iPad. The move is part of a new strategy designed to boost subscription sales by focusing on mobile apps.
Beats and MacBooks Pros are a great combo. Photo: Apple
Apple is back with a new back to school promotion that hooks students up with free or discounted pair of Beats headphones.
The 2018 promo is pretty similar to last year’s deal. Only instead of only being available in North America initially, this year Apple launched it simultaneously in the US, Mexico, Canada, EU and Asian countries.

The iPad Pro and Microsoft’s Surface Pro are serious competitors, but until now Redmond didn’t have anything to take on the $329 iPad. That changed with the reveal of the Surface Go.
This device is $70 more than Apple’s offering and includes a screen just a hair larger. Let’s take a look at how all of their specs compare.
The iPad and Apple Pencil is a winning combo. Photo: Apple
The iPad is an extraordinarily versatile productivity tool, and Apple is keen to showcase that fact in a series of stylish new ads. The 15-second spots demonstrate the way that Apple’s tablet — alongside the Apple Pencil — can be used to make it easier to deal with your paperwork or computing on the move.
Look at this blank home screen. Just look at it. Photo: Charlie Sorrel/Cult of Mac
What’s on your main iPad home screen? Is it organized so that you can find your most-used apps quickly? Or have you decided to arrange the icons by color? Or divided up the grid by adding a row of blank spaces? Those are pretty neat ideas, but today I’m going to suggest you do something even more radical. How about keeping your home screen entirely blank? No icons, no folders, nothing. Just the Dock, Spotlight search, and an easier-to-use iPad.
Apple has this week registered new iPads and Macs with the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC).
The filings hint that a big refresh could be just around the corner. Recent reports have promised that Apple is preparing a slew of new devices for a late 2018 launch alongside the next-generation iPhone lineup.

Developers received an early 4th of July present from Apple today in the form of banging batch of new betas for iOS 12, watchOS 5 and tvOS 12.
The third beta for iOS 12 arrives two weeks after Apple seeded the last software update to developers that contained a number of UI tweaks and performance enhancements. iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Apple TV all received some software loving from Apple today, but it looks like the next macOS Mojave beta is still baking.

New evidence that confirms Apple is preparing a future iPad with Face ID has been spilled by the latest iOS 12 beta.
One developer has discovered that AvatarKit, the framework that powers Animoji, is now ready for iPad. It still requires a TrueDepth camera which can only be found in iPhone X for now, but it seems that will change when new iPads arrive this fall.
Synth One is an incredible synth app for iOS. Photo: AudioKit Pro
Synth One just launched. It’s a new synth app for the iPad, but it’s also a big deal. Why? Because it is free, open-source, and built by volunteer musicians and programmers. Stay with me here. Synth One isn’t out typical hideous open-source bloatfest of an app. It’s beautifully designed, sounds great, is easy to use, and is above all fun.
The iOS 12 public beta could render your iPhone almost useless. Photo: Charlie Sorrel/Cult of Mac
The iOS 12 public beta is available to download and install on any of your compatible devices. The public beta is essentially the same as the developer beta, only each build is released around a week after the developer version. So far, the develoer beta has been surprisingly stable, but its definitely not ready for regular day-to-day use (more on that in a moment). But if you’re feeling brave, or if you have a spare device you’d like to use to see what all the fuss is about, then installing the beta is easy.

The best Apple analyst in the game just dropped a huge report on all the new products coming out soon and there’s a lot for Apple fans to be excited about.
If you’ve been desperately waiting for Apple to come out with a new MacBook Air the wait might be over real soon. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says a cheaper MacBook Air is set to launch later this year, and he’s got some info on the 2019 iPhone too.
Students and teachers can start using Schoolwork today. Photo: Apple
Apple’s free Schoolwork app, which lets students and teachers collaborate on school assignments, is available now.
Schoolwork makes it easy to create assignments, take advantage of third-party apps for learning, and view student progress. It will work alongside the Classroom app to provide teachers around the world with the tools they need to “enhance the learning experience.”
You no longer need to be a developer to try Apple’s biggest software updates of 2018.
Public testers can now get their hands on the first public beta builds of iOS 12 and tvOS 12 that bring tons of UI changes and feature improvements to the iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.
Yes, there’s a such a thing as ‘iPad neck.’ Here’s how you avoid it. Photo: R. Marsh Starks/UNLV Creative Services
Have you ever noticed a neck ache after using your iPad for a long period of time? If so, you’re not alone — and it’s become such a common complaint that it’s even led to the naming of an affliction, “iPad neck.”
In a newly published research paper on iPad neck, researchers from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas lay out some facts about the condition, including who it is most likely to affect.

A recent update to Apple’s Pages word processor added something called Presenter Mode, a neat, simplified full-screen view of your document that sits somewhere between Safari’s Reader View, and a full-on Keynote presentation. The text is enlarged, and can be set to scroll automatically.
In other words, Presenter Mode is a kind of teleprompter. The idea is not that you present the document to other people, like with a Keynote presentation, but that you yourself are the presenter. Let’s see how it works.

UPDATE: As of Friday afternoon, whatever the earlier problem was, this service appears to be working normally again.

Its official iOS app now uses artificial intelligence to provide notifications for your most important emails only.
The Queen, shown using her iPad. Photo: The Royal Family
As the maker of premium tech products, Apple attracts some pretty famous users. One of them? Britain’s longest-reigning monarch in history, Queen Elizabeth II.
In a recent episode of the BBC show Countryfile, it was revealed how the Queen uses her royal iOS devices for carrying out an activity very close to her heart. And, no, it’s not competitive Fortnite playing!
New regulations could force Apple to ditch Lightning cables in Europe. Photo: Ste Smith/Cult of Mac
This year’s iPhone lineup will come without a Lightning connector, according to a sketchy new report out of Asia.
Apple is expected to use an alternate method of charging and syncing that will please a lot of iPhone users. However, it could mean that all your existing iPhone accessories will no longer be compatible.
