I’ve been amazed lately about how incredibly good affordable headphones from brands like EarFun, Soundcore and Edifier continue to get. When I tested the recently released EarFun Tune Pro cans for a review, I had a hard time telling them apart, in several important ways, from the excellent — and much more expensive — Beats Studio Pro. In my reviews, I rarely give five stars out of five. But I did with EarFun Tune Pro. They seemed to out-do the great EarFun Wave Pro, the brand’s first step beyond earbuds into over-ear cans. And EarFun Tune Pro passed all of my usual tests regarding sound quality, level of noise cancellation, comfortable fit and overall features offered. I spent some evenings obsessively going back and forth between those surprisingly good cans and one of my go-to sets, Beats Studio Pro ($349, but often marked down below $200). Can I hear that sonata’s oboe in both? How crisp is that jazz drummer’s high-hat cymbal? Does the stadium-rock bass wash out at all?

One way to put it: I like EarFun Tune Pro headphones nearly as much as Beats Studio Pro in every way — but the EarFun cans are actually a little more comfortable and have a much longer playtime. But Beats just edges them out for sound quality and, unsurprisingly, wins outright for Apple ecosystem integration.

Excellent sound quality and big value overall

EarFun excels at what several lower-cost makers seems to be getting right these days. They get Hi-Res Audio certification by including the right technology and including good materials, and the result is highly focused, clear sound. So you might not get the spatial effect of a big soundstage, where you feel like you’re sitting in the middle of the orchestra. But you will get plenty of what music producers tend to value — musical detail.

I don’t doubt other affordable wireless headphones get increasingly high marks, including some I’ve sampled and some I haven’t. But from recent experience, I can vouch for EarFun Tune Pro. And when they’re 40% off, when would there be a better time to buy?
